What I learned About Website Health and Personal Health

Anyone who has a website hosted on Wealthy Affiliate is probably familiar with the “Site Health” gaugeWhat I learned on the upper right of our website log in form. Your site health is gauged on a sliding scale and the farther to the right of the scale the color is filled in the better your site health is.

As online business owners we need to be concerned about the health of our website. Also, since we are determined to “Make It Happen” we spend a lot of hours per week sitting in front of our computers. Sometimes too many hours with no break. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could check our personal health by looking at a gauge on our log in page. Well I’m not holding my breath waiting for a personal health gauge to show up so it’s up to each of us to monitor our own health while we let Wealthy Affiliate monitor our site health.

Let’s take a minute or two and talk about each.



Website Health and How it is Determined Website health


There are eight factors that Wealthy Affiliate uses to determine the health of our website. I’ll touch briefly on each one.

Publishing Frequency. Are you publishing regularly. The more content you publish the more up to date your site will be. Since regular posting adds content and value to your site it creates a better experience for your readers.

Reader Engagement or Comments. The more comments and discussions you can get on your posts the more trust you are building between you and your readers. So it is good to engage your readers with comments and discussion.

Plugins. Too many plugins will cause slower page loads. Wealthy Affiliate recommends no more than five plugins. Before I activate a plugin I go to pingdom and do a speed test on my page load time. Then after I activate the plugin I do another speed test to see if there is a noticeable slow down of page load time.

Google Ranked. Is your website indexed by Google?

Content Quality & Variety. Aim for 1000-1500 words per post but do not make all posts the same length so mix it up some.

Your Engagement. Engage with your readers in the comment section as that promotes more discussion among your readers. Google likes that.

Site Trust. As your website grows and matures the search engines will trust it more. As a new website the search engines have nothing to go on so the more quality posts you publish and visitor engagements you can stimulate will help increase your site trust.

Website Feedback. The more feedback you request through the Wealthy Affiliate feedback request form the higher this will rank.

So, those are the areas that Wealthy Affiliate uses to determine the overall health of your website. Read on and we’ll touch on some personal health tips to keep you performing at your best.



In Order to Take Care of Your Business You Must Take Care of YourselfWebsite health


If you are serious about your online business, and want to be successful, you are going to have to be sitting in front of your computer for many hours. You have a site to build, maintain, research and write content. As well as engaging in Social Media and other activities to promote your website.

Currently I am scheduling twenty hours every weekday to work on my website.  It is important to set up a schedule and stick to it to maximize your chances for success. Here is how my work schedule is set up.

  • 30 minutes working work related email.
  • 30 minutes on social media engagement to promote traffic.
  • 30 minutes commenting on my mentoring teams posts.
  • 30 minutes commenting on blogs within my niche
  • 30 minutes answering comments on my blog posts.
  • 90 minutes writing content for my blog

I have a timer and stick to the times listed. When time is up I move to the next task. As you can see this schedule is broken up into relatively short segments. So here is how I manage my personal health mixed in with this work schedule. Keeping in mind I also have certain tasks around the house that I also need to tend to each day, such as cooking, housecleaning, laundry etc.

After each 30 minute schedule block I’ll take 5 to 10 minutes to just get away from the computer. I might walk up and down the stairs once or twice or walk outside and have a look around the neighborhood. Anything to stretch my legs a bit and unstiffen from sitting at my desk.Take a walk

I start my work around 10am every day so you can see after my first four tasks it is around lunch time. I’ll grab a light lunch and relax for perhaps 10-15 minutes after eating. Then I’ll go out for a brisk 2 miles or so walk. Usually I’ll put in ear plugs and listen to some music as I walk. This helps clear my head and just give myself a mental break.

When I get back from my walk then I’ll resume my work schedule and finish out my scheduled website work day. I try to get in at least 10,000 steps a day so sometimes if the weather is bad that might be tough. What I do around the house while I work is when I take a break I may go put laundry away. When I do this I put one piece away at a time. In other words when I go to the dryer I’ll grab one pair of socks and go put them in my drawer then I’ll go grab another pair and do the same thing. One item, one trip to the bedroom. It may seem like a slow way to accomplish something but it gets in some extra walking.

On some days during one of my ten minute schedule breaks I may go clean a bathtub or clean the toilets. It breaks up my schedule, allows me to get everyday tasks aaccomplished and work in some exercise at the same time.

    I think you said all of this so well. It is so imperative that as the sole operator of our business that if we neglect ourselves, we might actually end up neglecting the business. So your advice is really vital for our success. And your schedule makes so much sense.

    I am trying to also figure out what the balance is for my healthy life and business. I hope that we all realize that having a healthy business means having a healthy us.

    I am thinking to institute your idea of after each task is completed taking a short break. That really makes a huge difference .

    1. Yes it is very important to take frequent breaks. Your eyes will also benefit from looking at something other than a computer screen as well. I wore a fitbit yesterday and even with being at the computer for over 7 hours I was able to get over 10,000 steps and 4.5 miles of walking in so that is my daily goal. I know I’ll fall short of the 10,000 on many days but once Spring and Summer arrive I should go over that.

    Indeed, you need to be aware of your health and not only on a personal level but also that of your business! Time management is of paramount importance. You need to be able to get a lot done at the scheduled time and in order to do this, you REALLY need to be disciplined.

    I’m a huge proponent of the importance of self-care. Yes, we are building a business and, yes, it takes all those things you mentioned, “time, dedication and common sense.” Taking a short break to do something for “you” or your household, in between tasks, brings us back to our work refreshed and ready to continue on.   5. Hi Craig, I have never been one to have a schedule but since joining Wealthy Affiliate I realize how vital it is so am putting that into practice. You have developed an excellent habit of exercising throughout the day and taking regular breaks. How do you record the amount of steps you take?

  6. Ever since I started working online, I have noticed myself getting a bit… ahem… heavier.

    Now I take a break every hour, give or take, and get up to move. I would possibly go for a walk if it wasn’t the middle of winter, but right now what I do it… dance.

    That may sound silly, but it is a great way to get the blood pumping and stretch out your legs. In addition to that, dance also tends to be a mood-booster, so that is pretty good, too.
